Buying Sheets? The Truth About Thread Counts…

Thread Count is the number of threads per square inch in the woven fabric of your Egyptian Cotton or Pure Cotton Bedding.

Manufacturers from many countries such as Egypt, China, Portugal, India and others are standardly using 2-ply or multiple-ply threads up to 4-ply, claiming the Thread Count (TC) of their Egyptian Cotton Sheets and Duvets to be double to quadruple what we consider to be the true value in the U.S.  While this may seem trivial on the surface level, the impact is substantial in the quality of product you’re receiving. Rather than using one single-ply, Long Yarn Egyptian Cotton or Pure Cotton fiber of excellence, the cheapest fibers are instead twisted together to create a longer “thread.”

So what does this mean to you as a consumer? For starters, it means that your new set you thought was, say, “1000″ TC is most likely truly only 250TC to 500TC. Worse yet, it will most likely feel and wear like lesser quality than a domestic 180TC set.

An excellent set is designed to last years, while cheaper sets are usually worn through in less than 365.

Fiber length is crucial in determining the quality and longevity of your new sheets, but a difficult factor to decipher as a consumer. These short fibers cause roughness, pilling or have surface balling, and result in extremely poor wear.

A good start point of ruling out short fiber sets is to review the package for information about ply. Any reference to the product containing a multiple ply, such as 2-ply or 4-ply, is your immediate tip-off that the item you are reviewing is usually comprised of shorter fibers. Because ply involves twisting threads together in order to create a long fiber, you’ll logically know that the necessity of fibers being twisted together to create length means that the fibers used are fairly short.

The bottom line is that you get what you pay for…. So if it seems too good to be true, it likely is.  Good sheets are more expensive, worth it, and get better as the years go by.

Tips for finding a good sheet:

If you prefer a crisp sheet, choose a percale weave, which is typically just a 200 thread count to 300 thread count.

For a soft, silky sheet, choose a sateen weave, which is usually 500 to 600 in thread count.

Price counts: Price is a good indicator of whether a sheet really is the thread count you want. Remember, cheap sheets are susceptible to shrinking.

While on the topic of price, you might want to take advantage of the D. Porthault sale, which ends February 4… up to 80% off.

Ammonites In Interior Design

Ammonites are long extinct pieces of history that make gorgeous decorative statements in both traditional and contemporary rooms.

AMMONITE  HISTORY:

The Ammonites survived several mass extinctions during the 330 million years they lived on Earth. The end of the Cretaceous Period (65 million years ago) was also the end for these cephalopods- history fans, take note!  Ammonites are found as fossils in most countries throughout the world. The name comes from the shell’s appearance: it resembles a ram’s horn.

What we now see is only the shell of the ammonite. The ammonite lived in the larger opening at the end of the shell, which acted as protection and enabled the ammonite to regulate its body pressure as it moved through different depths of water.

AMMONITE  LORE:

Lots of good lore about ammonite: all seem to attribute prosperity, health and good luck to the fossils. They are considered to be protective stones that give stability and structure to a person’s life,  are also said to change negativity into smoothly flowing energy. Ammonites are symbolic of the higher forces of the universe and their shape is said to attract and store wealth. Feng Shui believers consider ammonite to be  high energy stones that enhance the vitality, harmony, prosperity, and overall well-being of occupants and visitors of a home.

Whether you like them for their beauty or for their “meaning”, they are fascinating relics, jewels of the earth.

Ikat Fabrics

Ikat: derives from the Indonesian word mengikat meaning ‘to tie, bind or wrap around’, is a method of wrapping to pattern, dyeing the yarns before they are woven.  It is a centuries-old method of textile patterning.

Caring for Silver

Now that the holidays are over, people are returning their family silver to storage.  I thought this would be a good time to address the proper care for silver. Contrary to popular belief, silver does not need constant cleaning and the need to do so can be reduced by regular dusting with a soft cloth or washing with warm soapy water, rinsing and drying well. Some other things to keep in mind:

  • Silver should not be put in the dishwasher
  • When not in use or on display it will tarnish less if kept wrapped in acid-free tissue paper or undyed cotton or linen and kept in airtight conditions.
  • Tarnishing is caused by a number of factors including humidity, sulphurous foods such as egg yolks and fingerprints which can leave deposits.
  • To remove tarnish it is best to use cloths impregnated with silver foam or polish (never use polish intended for copper or brass).
  • Silver dip, which can be wiped on large objects, should not be used too many times.
  • Rinse after cleaning and dry carefully.
  • Never use wire or abrasive cloth to remove stains as they will scratch the surface.
  • Polish plated objects as seldom as possible as a small amount of silver will be removed over time and eventually wear away, exposing the metal core.
  • Silver will corrode as a result of being in contact with salt.  Salt cellars should be gilt or glass lined and the salt should be removed from them after use.
